June 29, 2002. Daegu, South Korea. World Cup third-place match, Turkey vs South Korea. After the opening kickoff, Turkey pushed forward. The ball reached Hakan Şükür, who slotted it past the Korean goalkeeper.
Time: 10.8 seconds. The fastest goal in World Cup history. Still unbeaten.
The Bull of the Bosphorus
Şükür was known as the “Bull of the Bosphorus” for his strength and finishing. He scored 51 goals in 112 appearances for Turkey — the national team’s all-time record. He won the Turkish league title multiple times with Galatasaray.
In 2000, he helped Galatasaray win the UEFA Cup — the first Turkish club to win a European trophy. He later played for Inter Milan and Barcelona.
From Pitch to Parliament
After retiring in 2008, Şükür entered politics. He was elected to the Turkish Parliament in 2011 as a member of the AK Party. But he gradually fell out with President Erdoğan’s government.
In 2013, he publicly criticized the government. By 2015, he had left the party. The government launched investigations into his business affairs.
Exile
Şükür and his family fled Turkey. He settled in the United States. He now lives in San Francisco, where he has driven for Uber. From scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history in front of billions, to driving passengers across the Bay Area.
The arc of his life is extraordinary — and unfinished.
